CAT 6 cable is a twisted pair cable for Ethernet and other network layers. The benefits of CAT 6 over CAT 5 is the noise reduction, for performance up to 250MHz compared to the 100MHz CAT 5 is rated for.
CAT 6 has a reduced maximum length of 55 meters when used for 10GBASE. The cable can be identified by the printing on the side of the sheath.
Category 6 is backwards compatible with CAT 5, 5e and CAT 3 cables. They are compiled of a copper wire core and an RJ-45 connector.
