SWA Rated - Armoured Cable

What is Armoured Cable (SWA)?

Steel Wire Armoured cable (SWA) is a hard wearing cable designed for the supply of mains electricity, it is also found in underground systems, power networks and cable ducting.

The conductor is usually made of stranded copper.

The insulator is commonly constructed of Cross-linked polyethylene, this is used in a number of power cables because it is good water resistance and excellent electrical properties. Insulation in cables ensures that conductors and other metal substances do not come into contact with each other.

The armour is steel wire, the name being a slight giveaway. This means that the wire can withstand higher pressures when used and can be buried without affecting the performance of the cable.

PVC Sheath

Cable with a PVC insulation or sheathing is flame retardant. The standard PVC is modified with additives and plasticizers which increase its flexibility. PVC can be made resistant to a wide range of chemicals including oils, acids and alkalis, and is tough, durable and resistant to abrasion, a very important factor for electric cables when used in industrial settings. PVC is a fantastic material and very versatile.

LSZH Sheath

Low Smoke Zero Halogen Cable is usually used in areas that are enclosed or badly ventilated. It does not give off harmful gases when exposed to heat or subjected to flames. Where several cables are run in the same area or duct, there is an increased risk of noxious gases causing health risks in the case of fire, therefore many organisations choose LSZH cable.

These cables are frequently used in such settings as rail tunnels, cars, submarines or aircraft where the presence of large amounts of smoke in the case of fire presents a higher risk.

Lower Halogen content in the cable sheath contain less toxic chemicals which can cause health problems and also create HCI which when mixed with water forms Hydrochloric Acid.
