ATEX Motors

ex logo

ATEX motors are designed to operate safely and save energy in environments where explosions can occur due to combustible dust. We can supply Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 22 along with 2GD dual certified motors.

1PH ATEX motors are also available in ATEX Zone 1 on short lead times from 0.18kW-3.0kW 2, 4 and 6 poles. Both Capacitor start capacitor run and permanent capacitor type's are available. All EXD motors are made, modified and certified in accordance with the regulation of IEC 60079. Thermistors are standard throughout the ATEX electric motor range and other modifications such as heater fitting, special shaft motors, alternative temperature classes and rain canopies for V1 mounting are available on short lead times.

For more information please do not hesitate to give one of our experienced team members a call, we are always happy to provide information.

EXD Motors | Explosion Proof Motors

Explosion Proof motors are used in industries where flammable particles or combustible gases are present. Some applications include:

  • Petroleum Refineries
  • Dry Cleaning Plants
  • Petrol Stations
  • Mettallurgy Plants
  • Chemical Plants
  • Textile Mills
  • Plastics Factories

With such a variety of motors available in different specifications such as EX D, EX nA, EX db and many more, it can be quite difficult to work out which motor you need for a specific environment or application. If you are struggling, we are happy to help, just drop us an email with your requirements and we will get back to you within a couple of hours.

What is an ATEX Motor Classification?

As of July 2003, organizations in EU must follow the directives to protect employees from explosion risk in areas with an explosive atmosphere. There are two ATEX directives (one for the manufacturer and one for the user of the equipment):

  • the ATEX 95 equipment directive 94/9/EC, Equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres;
  • the ATEX 137 workplace directive 99/92/EC, Minimum requirements for improving the safety and health protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres.

In Great Britain, the requirements of Directive 99/92/EC were put into effect through regulations 7 and 11 of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR). The requirements in DSEAR apply to most workplaces where a potentially explosive atmosphere may occur. Some industry sectors and work activities are exempted because there is other legislation that fulfills the requirements. These exemptions are listed in regulation 3 of DSEAR.

Which ATEX zone do I need for my Motor?

Your motor will display the EX logo if it is ATEX rated. The rest of the specs should be standard. If you need any help, just give us a call, or send us a photo of the plate and we can work out what you need.

To distinguish which ATEX rating your current motor falls under, please look for a tag with info similar to the image above. This will tell us the zone your motor needs to be rated for. If you are not replacing an existing motor, please see the table for a list of zones.

ATEX Zone Classifications - For All ATEX Motors

ATEX uses Zone numbers to distinguish between environments with different levels of danger. It is an employer’s responsibility to correctly classify the workplaces for which they are responsible. The classification given to a zone depends on the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere occurring and its persistence if it does. ATEX distinguishes between explosive atmospheres that arise because of gases, vapors and mists and those that arise from dust.

Gases, vapors and mists
Zone 0 A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is present continuously or for long periods or frequently.
Zone 1 A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
Zone 2 A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only
Dust
Zone 20 A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in the air is present continuously, or for long periods or frequently.
Zone 21 A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
Zone 22 A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in the air is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.
